Is there a more versatile and useful word in the teachers' vocabulary? I think not. If you stop and think for a moment, better yet, if you continue reading I think you will agree with me. Wait. What is the most versatile word, you ask? Well, if I told you right away, what fun would that be? Where's the suspense?
I believe the most versatile word in the Teacher's vocabulary is the word......"buddy." Let's take a moment to dissect this word and look at it through the lens of a teacher. I don't know about you, but I use this word about 500 times a day. It just always seems to work in any situation I find myself in. Whether it's a fun atmosphere, a serious one, or some other type of situation, it seems the word "buddy" just pops out of my mouth, as natural and effortlessly as breathing or blinking.
Let's look at how versatile the word truly is.
If you are congratulating a student: "Good job, buddy!"
If you are consoling a student who is having a tough time: "It's okay, buddy."
If you are upset with a student, "Hey! Buddy! Sit down and stop talking!"
If you are getting serious about something with a student: "Hey, buddy, I really need you to come through on this project."
If you are showing thanks: "Hey, thanks buddy!"
If you are surprised by a student, "Whoa! Buddy, I didn't see you there!"
If you are really excited about a students accomplishment: "Yeah!!! Great job buddy!"
If you are trying to build up a students' confident: "I know you can do it, buddy. I have confidence in you."
If you are just having a casual conversation with a student, "That sounds like a fun trip, buddy."
If you are in a hurry and don't have much time, go with "bud": "Not now, bud, I gotta get going."
It can easily be tagged at the end of almost any question: "How was your weekend, buddy?" "What are you doing this weekend, buddy?" What's your favorite team, buddy?" "Hey buddy, how's it going?" "Anybody have any questions?.....Yeah, what is it, buddy?"
If you are listening to a story, but not really paying attention, "Hey, that's cool, buddy."
And finally, it can (almost) be used as every word in the sentence: "Hey Buddy, that buddy over there is looking for a buddy. Why don't you be a good buddy and see if he wants to be your buddy, okay buddy?" (see?)
Anyway, I hope you learned a lot from this blog post. I think it was very informational and enlightening. The next time you find yourself using the word buddy, appreciate the versatility of the word. Or, if you find yourself in a pinch and don't know what to say, just say buddy.
Thanks, buddy.

Home Security System on your Keychain (for FREE)
Home security systems are pretty nice. Most home security systems now include the power to control your locks, lights, and thermostat right from your smartphone. However, these can be expensive to install and maintain monthly but home security should not be something one puts on the back burner. So the dilema: need a home security system but can't afford it. So what's the solution?
Solution: Sleep with your car keys by your pillow. If a robber or intruder is trying to break into your house, simply grab your car keys and hit the panic button on your remote. This will set off the car alarm on your vehicle and scare off the intruder. My house has been broken into my robbers many times and each time, I grab my keys and hit the panic button. So far, 100% of the time the robber has run away scared.
Seriously, try it!
If you don't have a key remote with a panic button, your house will probably get robbed.

The Wondrous Pizza Bagel
Is there such a food that makes one forget about all their problems? Is there a food that takes one out of reality and into a dream world of flavor and deliciousness? Is there a food that hypnotizes the mind and soul? The answer: Yes. A most emphatic Yes. It is called the Pizza Bagel and it is a wondrous combination of flavor and awesomeness. The Pizza Bagel can be bought at Bagel Boy in Sioux Falls, SD. Upon entering Bagel Boy, I walk with a spring in my step over to the counter and peer into the bagel rack to make sure they have the "Everything Bagel" which is by far the best type of bagel to use for the Pizza Bagel. One time, I walked into Bagel Boy and the worker informed me that the Everything Bagel was out for the day, I couldn't believe it. I put my head down and did the zombie shuffle out the door and into my truck, where I sat for 10 minutes and cried. I drove straight home and sat in a dark room, depressed for three days. When ordering the Pizza Bagel, make sure the worker puts a pepperoni over the hole in the bagel because then the sauce will not leak out the hole and fall onto your pants, making a slightly embarrassing stain on your trousers. I like to go to Bagel Boy, order a Pizza Bagel and then sit by myself in the corner of the restaurant and enjoy the delicious, flavor packed wonder that is the Pizza Bagel. It is best to sit alone, away from the other people because they often give odd glances of confusion as I sit there, eating with a giant smile plastered across my face the whole time. Upon first bite, the combination of cheese, sauce, pepperoni and the multiple flavor crystals of the Everything bagel such as onion, poppy, garlic, etc. makes my taste buds overflow like the Nile river. Each time I am fortunate enough to make it to Bagel Boy, I order a cinnamon crunch bagel with cinnamon and sugar along with my Pizza Bagel because when the Pizza Bagel comes out of the toaster, it is too hot to eat, so the cinnamon and sugar bagel serves as a nice little appetizer while you wait for the Pizza Bagel to cool. Eating the Pizza Bagel when it is too hot is one of the worst things a human can do because one can not enjoy all the flavor if it's too hot. So be patient. Dig down deep to find the strength to wait for it to cool off. Once it has reached the appropriate temperature, though, tear in to that thing with reckless abandon. So, next time you are in Sioux Falls or any city with a Bagel Boy, stop in. Order up a Pizza Bagel on the Everything Bagel. You will be glad you did. Saturday, May 17, 2014

Are You Ready?
Imagine it. Darkness. Your beating heart. Silence except for water dripping from a leaky pipe. Huddled in a basement, shaking, waiting for that dreadful sound. Supplies piled up in a corner, well, whatever supplies you managed to collect as you pillaged every house in the block, barely escaping back to your safe haven deep in this remote basement you found. The eerie quiet is disrupted when you hear it. That moaning. That shuffling of feet, scraping the pavement. The thud of flesh hitting the front door. Banging, banging. You peak up, over the window sill and know they have come. You see them, ragged and torn. Half their face eaten off, intestines and liver dangling from their spliced stomach. Their eyes are dead, blank stares. Their skin a milky grey, bruised, raw. They move forward in a rhythmic dance, their only goal is simply to feed. No longer a he or a she, but an it and as it moves forward, it is not alone. An inexperienced survivor across the street made a noise, attracting a herd. The mindless creatures shuffle towards the sound, away from you. You lean back, retreat towards your corner, dreaming of shrimp and tilapia, clutching your crossbow, thankful you didn't have to use it. You are safe, for now. But are you? Have you made the right preparations? Have you taken the necessary steps to survive? To live? Some say it's inevitable, some say it will never happen, but not preparing is a risky move. Will the Zombies come?
Gather supplies, non-perishable foods that will last a long time. Stock up on beef jerky, canned milk, and as much water as you can get. Don't forget dried fruit to ward off scurvy. Noise attracts them, so if you have a firearm, make sure you have a silencer. A sword, crossbow, or knife is preferable, due to the silent nature of those weapons, but the downfall is you can not engage the zombies from a distance. You have to get close. The key is to stay together. When moving from camp to camp, don't allow for any stragglers. They are the ones to surely get picked off first. Move in a group and watch each other's back. Always be on the look out. If you see a herd, you must flee, for the sheer number of them are too overwhelming to take on. You also must be on the look out for humans. The dire straits of the impending doom, the world on the brink of extinction, causes people to lose themselves, lose their spirit, their hope. When this happens, they turn on their fellow man. Stopping at nothing to survive. You must not let this happen to you. You must not lose yourself amidst the chaos and darkness. Keep your soul, your spirit. Keep your humanity and maybe, just maybe will be able to save all of mankind.
This past summer, I had the chance to sit down with a neurologist at Sanford hospital and talk to him about Zombies and the nature of the Zombie brain. I asked him, "Sir, are Zombies real?" His response, "No." I countered, "Can a person turn into a zombie?" "Um, no." Undeterred, I continued, "Sir, I was watching this show, called the Walking Dead, and they had a part in one of the episodes about the brain stem being alive, but nothing else. The brain stem would just flicker with life, but nothing else. How do you explain that?" (Clearly annoyed by my line of questioning, the neurologist explain): "You see here, young man, the brain stem is the highway between the brain and the body. It is the most essential part of the body. If the rest of the brain is dead, but the brain stem still flickers with life, then maybe, just maybe, the body would make involuntary movements." Intrigued, I went on, "So could they walk?" His response, "Well, maybe if you held them upright, they might shuffle forward." Eyes wide, I continued, "So, zombies could happen?" His response: "No and get out of my office."
Well, my fellow humans, I guess that's it. No zombie apocalypse for us anytime soon.
